Windows 7 black screen when upgrading from Vista

Having being faced with  a black screen and just an arrow when upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 home premium, I was a little stuck as to what to do! I tried re-installing again, did diagnostics on my Dell but was still faced with this annoying black screen. It seems that Windows 7 will default to a hdmi tv if you have one hooked up. So basically my monitor was showing nothing, but in the other room (in which my HDMI cable connects to my TV) I had a full desktop of pretty Windows 7 icons waiting to be used! It does seem stupid that Windows 7 upgrade would do this. I thought I'd share it though if anyone else has this issue. Right click on your desktop and go to 'desktop settings' to switch between monitor outputs.
